Hurricane Irene Damages (Photos)

Hurricane Irene was a North Atlantic tropical cyclone that caused extensive damage across the Caribbean before making landfall in North Carolina, on the East Coast of the United States. It passed through New York City with relatively limited damage, but caused devastating flooding damage further inland in parts of New York State and Vermont. Irene dissipated over Quebec on August 29, 2011 and entered Atlantic Canada as a post-tropical storm.[2]

Hurricane Irene Set to Slam New York, Long Island Tomorrow

Hurricane Irene is expected to go ashore near the border of Nassau County and Queens at about 9 a.m. tomorrow, threatening some 80,000 homes worth more than $35 billion with storm surge, forecasters and analysts said.
Irene may still be a Category 1 hurricane, with winds of at least 74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour, when its center makes landfall on its way toward Canada, said Tim Morrin, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton, New York. The storm, packing as much as 20 inches of rain, will hit near the time when tides are high across much of the region, according to published tide tables.
“With the storm surge and the amount of water it brings, the most important aspect is to just evacuate,” said Scott Little, vice president and general manager of CoreLogic Inc. Spatial Solutions in Austin, Texas. “I don’t see a lot of change between now and the time it hits. Obviously, the lower the storm surge, the lower the damage.”
Hurricane Irene made its first landfall early today on North Carolina’s outer banks, flooding roads and knocking out power to more than a million homes and businesses, according to local utilities. Five storm-related deaths have been reported.

Didier Drogba Released from Hospital after head injury,

Didier Drogba was taken to hospital after suffering a head injury in Chelsea's 3-1 home win over ten-man Norwich City. The striker was knocked out in a collision with goalkeeper John Ruddy and was carried off on a stretcher wearing what appeared to be a breathing aid after receiving seven minutes' treatment.

Drogba remained unconscious "for quite some time", manager Andre Villas-Boas said afterwards. The club later confirmed Drogba had undergone a scan at St Mary's Hospital, which showed nothing untoward, and he was expected to be allowed home last night.

"He was completely unconscious," Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said. "The doctor did a great job. He is showing progressive signs of recovery but we need a full exam which is being done."

Drogba's injury scare was just one of several dramas in a game decided by a controversial penalty. Its award with ten minutes remaining sparked a major flashpoint, with Norwich boss Paul Lambert shoving Chelsea coach Jose Mario Rocha after the latter entered the visitors' technical area to celebrate the spot-kick.

Didier drogba has been released from Hospital following tests. Club's medical staff will continue to monitor him over coming days.

Jonathan yet to Speak as Car bomb blast kills 18 in UN building attack

By Bashir Adigun
A car laden with explosives rammed through two gates and blew up at the United Nations' offices in Nigeria's capital Abuja today, killing at least 18 people and shattering part of the concrete structure.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it "an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others".

The brazen attack, carried out as the four-storey UN offices teemed with staff, comes as Africa's most populous nation faces the growing threat of both homegrown and international terrorism.

UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said: "We do not have any confirmation as yet who was responsible."

But suspicion fell on Boko Haram, the Muslim sect with reported links to al Qaida that wants to implement a strict version of Shariah law in the nation and is vehemently opposed to Western education and culture

Gaddafi wanted dead or alive, says rebel leader

The Libyan rebels have stepped up attempts to find Muammar Gaddafi by announcing that any members of the fleeing leader's entourage who killed or captured him would be given an amnesty, a pardon and possibly a £1m reward.

Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the chairman of the National Transitional Council (NTC), said anyone in the regime's "inner circle" who obliged would be given an "amnesty or pardon for any crime he has committed". A businessman in the eastern city of Benghazi, he added, had put up 2m Libyan dinars (£1m) for anyone who managed to capture Gaddafi.

The announcement marked a change in tone from Jalil, who on Monday called on Libyans to "not take justice into their own hands" and said he hoped the dictator would be captured alive. Guma El-Gamaty, the UK co-ordinator of the NTC, said he hoped the reward would prove a "huge incentive" to those close to Gaddafi, such as his bodyguards and aides, to switch sides.

US, British, and other Nato countries are using every intelligence resource and electronic tracking device at their disposal to find Gaddafi. UK defence officials said that, while the fighting was not over, it was a question of when – and not if – the 69-year-old leader would be discovered.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: Can she save Nigeria

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (born June 13, 1954) was appointed in July 2011 as the new Minister of Finance for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. she is also the Economic Management Team (EMT) Coordinator.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had her workload increased on Tuesday as President Goodluck Jonathan picked her to chair the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc board

Inaugurating the board of the firm, also known as the Bulk Trader, Jonathan noted in the Villa in Abuja that the Bulk Trader is a key component of the implementation of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act.

It will act as a catalyst for new investment in power generation and is equally expected to stabilise the market for those already in the business especially as successor distribution companies of the Power holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) are being privatised.

Jonathan said power distribution companies find it challenging to collect enough revenue from their customers to pay for power they receive from generating companies.

He noted that as potential investors do not have the confidence that they will receive payment when they produce and deliver power, they will not be encouraged to invest in the sector.

Defiant Gaddafi vows to keep fighting; journalists freed

TRIPOLI — A defiant Moammar Gaddafi vowed to keep fighting Wednesday, hours after his fortified compound was overrun by rebel fighters, and journalists were freed from a luxury hotel where they had been effectively held captive by Gaddafi loyalists since the weekend.

Gaddafi’s whereabouts were unknown, and loyalist forces continued to put up resistance in scattered areas around the capital. Heavy gunfire was reported Wednesday morning in the vicinity of the Rixos hotel, where more than three dozen Western journalists were trapped by Gaddafi supporters, and battles were reported in the vicinity of the airport

Latest on The End of Ghadaffi

Joyful Libyan rebels overran Muammar Gaddafi's Tripoli bastion on Tuesday, seizing weapons and loot and destroying symbols of a 42-year dictatorship they declared was now over as they set about hunting down the fallen ruler and his sons.

"It's over! Gaddafi is finished!" yelled one fighter over a cacophony of celebratory gunfire across the Bab al-Aziziya compound, from where Gaddafi orchestrated eccentric defiance of Western powers and disdain for his own people for four decades.

Western powers who backed the revolt with air power held off from pronouncing victory although a swift return to order is high on their priorities, given fears that ethnic and tribal divisions among the rebels could descend into the kind of anarchy that would thwart hopes of Libya resuming oil exports.

Rebel National Council chief Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who was until February a loyal minister of Gaddafi, cautioned: "It is too early to say that the battle of Tripoli is over. That won't happen until Gaddafi and his sons are captured."

Mahmoud Jibril, head of the rebel government, promised a transition toward a democracy for all Libyans. "The whole world is looking at Libya," he said, warning against summary justice.

"We must not sully the final page of the revolution."

At the Bab al-Aziziya, long a no-go area, armed men broke up a gilded statue of Gaddafi, kicking its face. Others ripped up his portrait or climbed on a monument depicting a clenched fist, which Gaddafi erected after a U.S. air strike in 1986.

Another rebel sported a heavily braided, peaked military cap of a kind favored by the colonel, who seized power in 1969. He said he had taken the hat from Gaddafi's bedroom.

Nigeria: Where religion is big business

By Tomi Oladipo
BBC Lagos

An increasing number of Nigeria's 70 million Christians are followers of the prosperity teachings - the belief that prosperity is a sign of spiritual blessing. Services are held in megachurches that hold thousands, with millionaire pastors preaching the word.

A lady scrolls down the screen of her tablet PC as she reads the Bible along with the rest of the congregation, a huge diamond-encrusted ring shining on her finger.

Hanging from the ceiling of the Household of God Church are several chandeliers, lighting up a plush 5,000-seat auditorium.

A water fountain hisses in the distance, though it is only heard when the dazzling character on stage singing passionately and occasionally speaking in tongues falls into silence.

This is the Reverend Chris Okotie, a former pop star turned pastor, businessman and politician.

A recent Forbes rich list included him among Nigeria's five wealthiest pastors, with assets of anywhere between $3m and $10m. But is he truly this rich?

"Possibly," he replies, with his giant multi-coloured Jacob & Co brand wristwatch shining from the end of his sleeve.
