Liberia ex-President Charles Taylor get 50 years in prison

Liberia's ex-President Charles Taylor has been sentenced to 50 years in jail for by a UN-backed war crimes court. Last month Taylor was found guilty of aiding and abetting rebels in Sierra Leone during the 1991-2002 civil war. The prosecution at the Special Court for Sierra Leone wanted an 80-year prison term, which the defence said was excessive.

Taylor, 64, insists he is innocent and is likely to appeal the sentence, correspondents say. The appeal process could last up to six months, the BBC's Anna Holligan in The Hague reports. 'Savage crimes'
During the sentencing, Judge Richard Lussick said the crimes in Sierra Leone were the most heinous in human history. In its landmark ruling in April, the Special Court for Sierra Leone found Taylor guilty on 11 counts, relating to atrocities that included rape and murder.
He became the first former head of state to be convicted of war crimes by an international court since the Nuremburg trials of Nazis after World War II.

VIDEO: ASUU Chairman(Lagos Chapter) Speaking on the Change of Name from UNILAG to MAULAG

Students Protest President Jonathan's Renaming of UNILAG to

Some students of the University of Lagos, today are protesting the change of their school's name from University of Lagos (UNILAG) to Moshood Abiola University. A change which has met with lots of criticism in the social media amongst young Nigerians. The President of Nigeria in his speech marking His One year in office changed the name of the University in Honour of Moshood Abiola.

As much as I dont see any neeed for a Change in the name of the University or using such to Honour any Nigerian, I also do not see the need to protest such, as there are other things to protest against. Change of Name of an Institution seems relatively harmless, however some Students of the school are protesting the change, saying the name doesnt sound cool. If am asked, I would say everyone in the story has misplaced their priorities.

Audio Excerpts from church service, Jonathan, ministers, decline to say "amen" to prayer against corruption

By Bassey Udo
via PremiumTimes

Immediate past Prelate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Peter Akinola, in his sermon at the interdenominational church service at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to commemorate the 2012 National Democracy Day, accused governments at all levels of allowing corruption to eat into the country’s socio-economic and political fabric, because they are paying lip service to the fight against the malaise.

In the sermon, Reverend Akinola proffers solution by asking government to agree to hand over perpetrators of corruption in all its ramifications to God. We bring you audio excerpts from the sermon.

The Man of God dared President Goodluck Jonathan and his cronies to make a commitment to end corruption in Nigeria, he got a dead silence

Will Smith Slaps Reporter for trying to Kiss him

Saw this video of Will smith giving a reporter a lil slap for seemingly trying to kiss him. Some people do have zero tolerance for such. The guy may in his defence say that he was just greeting.

Though we all have a right to be what ever we want to be in terms of sexual disposition, however, I support Will Smith on this one because it seemed like the man was encroaching past boundaries in his invasion of Will's personal space.

Chelsea win Champions League in penalties over Bayern Munich

Via Guardian
These are the moments Chelsea will always cherish and never forget. They gave everything and finally, when it was all done, they had the European Cup in their possession and a night that will go straight in at number one in their list of great triumphs from the Roman Abramovich era.

It was a rare form of euphoria on a night when, just like Moscow four years ago, it came down to the gut-wrenching drama of a penalty shoot-out. At one stage Bayern Munich were leading 3-1 and the Chelsea players stood in line, heads bowed, fearing the worst. Juan Mata's effort had been saved by Manuel Neuer and at that point Roberto Di Matteo's players knew they were on the brink of walking past the European Cup and not being allowed to touch the silver.
What happened next was extraordinary and went against everything we know about the efficiency of Bundesliga clubs and penalties. Petr Cech started the turnaround by saving from Ivica Olic and with Bayern's next effort Bastian Schweinsteiger's shot came back off the post. David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole had all beaten Neuer and suddenly, almost implausibly, it was left to Didier Drogba with probably the last kick of his last match for the club. What a parting gift the Ivorian may have left considering that it was also his 88th-minute goal that had dragged this final into extra time, just as Thomas Müller's goal looked like giving Bayern their fifth victory in this competition.

Barrack Obama's Early "New York girlfriend"

Source The “New York girlfriend” mentioned by President Barack Obama in his book “Dreams from My Father” is actually several women melded into one, according to an upcoming biography of the president by David Maraniss. Vanity Fair adapted parts of the biography “Barack Obama: The Story” for a profile of the young Obama published today, based partially on interviews with two of his former girlfriends and their journal entries and letters from the time, reports the Huffington Post. One of the women, Genevieve Cook [pictured above and below], was his most serious girlfriend while living in New York. Most of the “New York girlfriend” referenced in his book is based on Cook, but Cook told Maraniss some of the anecdotes were things she never experienced. The president confirmed to Maraniss in an interview that the girlfriend discussed in the book is an amalgamation of a few women, although the description of her appearance is similar to Cook’s.
